Searching For a Balance in Education The definition of education encompasses many different meanings. It can be delineate as schooling, studies, learning, the educational system, and the list continues on. Both Adrienne Rich and Jon Spayde feel that education is composed all of these elements. But learning at a school, inside of a classroom is only the beginning. There is much more to learn otherwise than what is inside of a text book. Learning, in large part, will come from experiencing the happiness, horrors, tragedies, and other lessons that life will bring us. We will not be able to truly appreciate our gift of knowledge until we learn to look within ourselves and to don the self- awareness we need to recognize the meaning and importance of education. Spayde and Rich feel that a school education alone does not prepare us for the existing gentleman. Both Spayde and Rich give accounts of what they have experienced inside the educational arena. (66) Jon Spayde, author of Learni ng in the Key of Life,s ntless experiences of many writers to illustrate the respective(a) types of education that exist in todays society. He and his colleagues dont necessarily believe that a formal education is the only path to learn, but instead there are various avenues for acquiring knowledge. The whole world is a classroom, and to really make it one, the first thing is to believe it is. (62) In Spaydes essay, Elizabeth Sutton- Lawrence discusses Greek education, known as in-the-street education,where the Greeks learned largely in part from first-hand experience. I wasnt expecting it, I just looked up and there it was the disgusting, bloody, mauled body of a deceased soldier. The shot was truncated and I do non remember if he was strung up on a tree, if he was hanging, or what non. I was not in contour the day prior due to a sleepless night led to sickness, so I was not able to watch the prototypic part of the movie. I remembered that our class was supposed to watch a war movie Ms. Klein was deciding between Born on the Fourth of July and Platoon. I vaguely remember her byword something about one of the movies being a slight bit, well, gruesomely horrifying. Due to a number of things that were due in my classes that day, when I walked into my incline room, I was not thinking about the warnings that I was given. Then I looked up. Shocked I guess you could say was my first reaction. I was a little too move to be disgusted. Dont sound so disappointed, I became sick to my stomach all too soon. It was hard for me to concentrate on a s ens of Platoon during the first day of class. I looked at the screen only half of the time I buried my head in topical work so as to hide my eyes from the disasters on TV. I would occasionally look up and sure enough, each time I proceeded to transport my head, I squealed, and mould it back down. I remember scenes of teenage boys being tortures with bullets, old women and men being killed, girls being raped, and children being put in presence of a passing squad. That night, I couldnt control the terrible scenes that flooded my head as I tried to sleep. The next day, I had learned to get hold of with the violence a little more than the previous day. I watched almost all of it, having to turn away only occasionally. The emotions that the violence expressed held me taut it no longer dark me away from the screen, but drew me in, showing me further the horrible nature of war. Even though director Oliver Stone may present exaggerated situations in the war, he presented Vietnam lik e no one before. Philosophy of Teaching Statement :: Educating Education Essays Teacher

Philosophy of Teaching Statement As a freshman in college, I was faced with one of the most big decisions of my life. I had to decide where I wanted my college education to go and what I wanted to be catch as an adult. My consentient freshman year, I struggled to arrange a decision. My family encouraged me to major in business, because even if I didnt like my job they felt that I could act upon a lot of money and have financial security. They didnt feel like education was the right career for me. I felt like it was important for me to have a career that was emotionally fulfilling to me rather than having a career that I would make a lot of money. I have always enjoyed maths I took many extra math classes while I was in high school. I also wanted to become a ascertainer. Finally in the last few months of the year I came to a decision I decided I wanted to become a math teacher and teach eighth grade math. So, I decided to pursue a degree in math and general sci ence (5-9) Education. It was a huge relief to me when I finally decided to become a teacher I feel very happy with the decision I have made. I want to make a positive difference in kids lives and I feel this is the best way for me to do that. No two students are alike so, you have to oppose accordingly. Some students come to school to learn and make a life for themselves. Other students besides come to school because it is a requirement. Teachers cannot expect to have only students who want to be in school. Teachers must use different teaching methods in order to make sure that all the students learn the material, which is where teaching philosophies come into play. In our education classes we are asked to think about the types of educational philosophies we will use in our classrooms to teach. My views on education philosophies are eclectic. I agree with essentialism, progressivism, and behaviorism. The meaning of a teacher is his or her beliefs and philoso phies.
